HD-DVD offensive starting to crack, Blu-ray gets ammo

jef195 used our news submit to tell us "To those interested..." about this article put up at ArsTechnica. They say that the HD-DVD camp is trying to get a "leg up" on Sony by launching their high capacity product as early as this holiday season, it is reported there that the Blu-ray spec isn't expected to be available prior to mid 2006.

But there is a fly in the ointment as now the Wall Street Journal is saying that movie studios are thinking of holding back on content. For that reason, if this turns out to be the case, the lack of content will dampen the debut. No content is bad news when it comes to the promotion of these new devices.

Paramount Pictures, for instance, has nixed their plans for holiday releases entirely, although they have not indicated that they are bailing out of HD DVD altogether. NBC Universal will be releasing some HD DVD titles, but they have scaled their release back 25 percent. As of today, no other HD DVD titles have been announced.

The Journal also speculates that Toshiba will likely be the only company to bring a HD DVD player to market during the holiday season, and with an expected price circa US$1,000, it"s unclear how many will fly off shelves immediately.

Man this is taking forever! Couple that with a $1000.00 price tag and we can't expect a whole lot of excitment this holiday season. Let's hope this report turns out to be very inaccurate.
