Sony has unveiled a dual-layer version of the XDCAM Professional Disc media, which features 50GB of storage capacity, allowing for up to 4.5 hours of HD footage at 18Mbps using the MPEG HD 4:2:0 mode. For the 25Mbps and 35Mbps modes, the media offers a recording time of 3 hours 20 minutes and 2 hours 30 minutes respectively. Like the single layer XDCAM Professional Disc media, this dual-layer version is also targeted at broadcast and professional video production applications.
As with the single-layer version, this media is 12cm in diameter and is enclosed in a protective cartridge resistant to dust, shock and X-rays. The disc features a track pitch of 0.32µm, supports over 1,000 rewrite cycles and over 1 million read cycles and has an estimated archival life of over 50 years. This new dual-layer media is planned to be available in September to coincide with the planned launch of several next generation XDCAM HD products, including the PDW-F355L HD camcorder.
