Study states music industry must give music away for free

In yet another study, Parks Associates have come to the conclusion that the only way out of the current downslide for the music industry is to give away the music. The team of analysts does market research and consulting, they focus on all product and service segments that are "digital" or provide connectivity within the home.

This report was a free whitepaper given in response to the effectiveness of the legal campaign against piracy. They feel that the industry has failed to adapt to the digital age. The plan they propose is to undermine the piracy by simply creating an on demand service for music that is supported solely by advertising revenue. Ok I'm game, RIAA the ball is in your court now!

"Digital music has changed the market, and business models need to change too or the industry will suffer the consequences," said John Barrett, research analyst at Parks Associates. "Even if file-swapping networks were to magically disappear, the traditional revenue models would still be under strain."

In the paper, Barrett points out that the recording industry has historically been able to sell consumers the same piece of music multiple times by repackaging it and introducing new, improved mediums. Digital music allows consumers to repackage music themselves and negates the need to upgrade formats.

Well what he says is true, but I would hate to be the executive up at Universal that swaggers in the boardroom chambers, throwing this report on the conference desk challenging everyone in the room to "think outside the disc".

John Barrett has authored a dozen reports on the mobile phone and broadband industries, particularly as they relate to Asian markets. He holds an M.A. in international economics from the Johns Hopkins University and a B.S. in international affairs from Georgetown University. The report "Thinking Outside the Disc"  Piracy, Digital Music, and the Future of the Recording Industry; can be downloaded for free from the Parks Associates website if you fill out a small identification form.
