AT&T reportedly preparing new iPhone launch

The anticipated launch of the latest Apple iPhone is expected towards the end of June instead of early July, with Apple's World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) expected to take place from June 28 to July 2.

The specific rumored date is June 22 in San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center -- a smaller venue than the Moscone Center, which is where Apple normally hosts major events and press conferences.

Even though it would make sense for Apple to launch the new phone during WWDC, Apple CEO Steve Jobs has been known to launch new products whenever he wishes, usually separate from other related tech events.

If Apple does launch the new phone in June, it will likely be released sometime late this spring or in early summer.  The  timing seems to make perfect sense for Apple, with the company recently promoting multitasking and other new features of the iPhone OS version 4.

Jobs released the iPhone 4.0 OS developer preview during the company's iPhone OS event last week -- giving app makers the chance to familiarize themselves with the new OS environment before upgrading and developing new apps.

Apple is not surprisingly going to remain silent until event day, though expect to see more rumors hitting the interwebs as the date approaches.

Unconfirmed reports also indicate AT&T -- the sole wireless company offering the iPhone in the US -- is preparing for a June launch.  AT&T competitor Verizon Wireless still wants the iPhone, though the company is still launching its own flagship phones in the meantime, such as the HTC Droid Incredible.

I'd still be more than happy to see the iPhone head to Verizon, but it's good to see Verizon still promoting new Google Android-powered devices.
