Best Buy to carry Barnes & Noble Nook e-readers

Barnes& Noble will now sell its Nook e-reader in Best Buy, as the company continues the perilous task of marketing its Nook e-reader against the Amazon Kindle and Apple iPad.

Starting on April 18th, all Best Buy retail locations in the United States will begin selling the $259.99 Nook e-reader.  Also included in the deal, Barnes & Noble will get its eReader software loaded on certain mobile phones, PCs and notebooks sold at Best Buy.

Best Buy currently offers the iPad in retail stores and online, so the store doesn't plan to exclusively carry just one product in the e-reader/tablet industry.

"To date, we've limited Nook distribution to Barnes & Noble retail and online stores and the customer response to our e-book reader has exceeded our expectations," said Kevin Frain, B&N Executive VP of e-commerce.  "We have enormous respect for the Best Buy organization, through this partnership, Best Buy customers will now have new and easy ways to access our expansive digital library on a variety of computing and mobile devices."

The Best Buy Web site now offers a Nook battery for $29.99  and a USB cable kit for $14.99.  Next week Best Buy will add the Nook online, with Nook accessories expected to be included throughout the summer.

I dread the thought of Best Buy and manufacturers including even more bloated software on products, but this is obviously a great partnership for B&N.  The book store must now deal with the iPad tablet along with the industry-leading Kindle e-reader from Amazon -- additional exposure at Best Buy should drastically help increase exposure and sales of the Nook.
