The 14-year old company Oppo Digital has announced it will gradually stop manufacturing new products. The company will continue to support existing customers with firmware updates and warranties also remain valid.
Oppo Digital is a division from the Chinese company OPPO Electronics. Oppo Digital has it headquarters in California, the United States. As a reason for the production stop, the company writes in its parting statement that its, “latest 4K UHD players reach the pinnacle of their performance.”
Why that would be a reason for a company to cease operations is unclear, possibly the company outpriced itself. Their products are regarded as high quality but are sometimes multiple times more expensive than offerings from competitors. Besides Blu-ray players, the company also sells audio systems.
Owners of Oppo devices will continue to be supported. The company will continue to do in-warranty and out-of-warranty repairs. Oppo also promises it will continue to maintain firmwares and release updates from time to time.
Another reason for their popularity is that specific firmwares are sold for Oppo Blu-ray players that promise to remove Region Playback Control (RPC) and disable the Cinavia copy protection. There are reportedly available for the Oppo BDP-103 and BDP-105.
