Chinese Microsoft offices raided by Chinese government

The Chinese government raided Microsoft offices in four cities in the country today. The Chinese have also started an official investigation against the company. The scope of the investigation is unclear but is likely related to alleged cooperation of Microsoft with American secret services.

Both Microsoft and the Chinese government confirm the raiding of Microsoft's offices in Peking, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu, but neither have commented on the scope of the investigation, according to newspaper South China Morning Post. Microsoft reports it will actively cooperate with the investigation.

The raid might be related to espionage, last month the Chinese state television accused Microsoft of working together with American secret services. The company would have built in backdoors in its software so the United States could spy on Chinese users. Two weeks before that, the Chinese government banned Windows 8 for new PCs on government computer because of 'security reasons'.
