Leaked AACS 2.0 Volume Keys generate wave of new Ultra HD Blu-ray torrent releases

The leaked AACS 2.0 Volume Keys have caused a wave of new Ultra HD Blu-ray torrents to be released. Yesterday there were 13 new movie releases by release groups with names like SharpHD, IAMABLE, TERMiNAL, EMERALD, COASTER, SUPERSIZE and DEPTH. Today we've counted 11, with likely more to come.

The increase in releases appears to be related to the release of the AACS 2.0 Volume Keys two days ago. Previously about 4-6 movies were released every day with the majority coming from a release group called TERMiNAL. The last two days the number of releases has been significantly increased, including the number of groups that are actively involved in releasing Ultra HD Blu-ray movies. Interestingly not all newly released movies are on the list of leaked keys.

Also the release of Ultra HD Blu-ray ripping software DeUHD appears to have increased the number of Ultra HD Blu-ray releases. The software was first released on the 27th of October this year. Before that date Ultra HD Blu-ray releases were pretty scarce. Often the same movie was released by several release groups on the same day. Now release groups appear to rush to release new Ultra HD Blu-ray movies, likely to beat other groups to it.

It's plausible the leaked keys have something to do with that, because they made it possible to rip Ultra HD Blu-ray discs for free. Previously a €200 ($234) lifetime license of DeUHD had to be purchased from Arusoft. With the leaked keys it's possible to rip discs with the free software 'MakeMKV'. By adding the AACS 2.0 keys to a specific file (instructions), MakeMKV is able to rip Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. This will only work with so-called 'Blu-ray friendly' drives, and not with official AACS 2.0 certified Ultra HD Blu-ray drives, caused by a loophole in the AACS 2.0 copy protection.
