LG rolls out 3DTV lineup for 2010

LG Electronics is the latest TV manufacturer to outline plans for its 3DTV product portfolio, with the South Korean TV powerhouse expected to announce entire product lines during the second half of 2010.

LG, the No. 2 TV manufacturer in the world based on revenue, plans to sell 400,000 3DTVs next year, with an estimated goal of 3.4 million in 2011, the company noted.  Furthermore, a partnership with SkyLive will help enhance 3D image technology, which will reduce eye strain and other ailments found in some 3DTVs today.

According to company executives, LG hopes to sell 25 million LCD TV units in 2010 -- revealing that the company is interested in 3DTVs, but is in no rush to try and flood the market.

The South Korean electronics manufacturer currently has one 3DTV, a 47-inch model, but its high price has kept it out of the hands of the masses.  The new product announcements in 2010 will include both business and consumer line 3DTVs.

Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, and other TV manufacturers are investing heavily into 3DTV production, despite the technology's infancy.

There is a serious lack of 3D movies and TV content, but that is slowly shifting, with more movie studios rolling out 3D movies in theaters -- and 3D Blu-ray movies.  Many content makers are patiently waiting to see how the industry develops before investing too heavily, as it's unknown if consumers actually want the format.

Even with industry hesitation, analyst group DisplaySearch anticipates the 3DTV market will be valued at $1.1 billion in sales in 2010, which will increase to $15.8 billion by 2015.
