Former Chinese consumer electronics company Oppo has released a beta of a HDR10+ update for its UDP-203 and UDP-205 high-end Ultra HD Blu-ray players. The update shows the company holds its promise of continuing support for its Blu-ray players, which it no longer manufacturers.
Users can upgrade their firmware by copying files from their PC to a USB stick or by creating a firmware disc on their computer. When either is inserted into the player, the installation of the update will automatically start. Because the update is a beta release, it's not possible to perform an update over the network.
The most important new feature of the update is addition of HDR10+ support, the UDP-203 and UDP-205 already support HDR10 and Dolby vision.
In April 2018, Oppo announced it would gradually stop manufacturing audio systems and Blu-ray players because, "latest 4K UHD players reach the pinnacle of their performance."
Together with the announcement the company also stated it would continue to provide support for existing products. With the release of a new firmware for the UDP-203 and UDP-205 in June and December last year, the company shows it's indeed dedicated in providing support to existing customers.
Oppo Blu-ray players are popular because they are regarded as high-quality. Another reason for their popularity is that specific firmwares are sold for Oppo Blu-ray players that promise to remove Region Playback Control (RPC) and disable the Cinavia copy protection. There are reportedly available for the Oppo BDP-103 and BDP-105.
