The company also committed to using renewable energy for its Mexico and Brazil activities. Samsung's facilities in the U.S., Europe, and China are currently fueled entirely by renewable energy sources.

Samsung's yearly sustainability report issued in June noted that its greenhouse gas emissions increased by 5% year over year, which is equivalent to 14.8 million tons of carbon dioxide.

Samsung missed its 2020 emissions target, which would have amounted to a 70% decrease in the emissions it created in 2008. Samsung now consumes fossil fuels for 82% of its electricity demands, as per Greenpeace.

Greenpeace said that Samsung has the power to make significant progress by continuing to pursue simpler renewable energy access in Korea and Vietnam considering the size and impact of Samsung on their economies, and its pledge to achieve renewable energy targets in other industries.

TM Roh, President of Samsung Mobile Communications Business, said "We believe that everyone has a role to play in providing innovative solutions that protect the planet for generations to come.”

"Galaxy for the Planet is an important step in our journey toward creating a more sustainable world, and we will do so with the openness, transparency, and collaboration that drives everything we do,” Roh explained.

He added that Samsung recognizes that the initiatives must reflect the scope, scale, and influence of the whole Galaxy ecosystem throughout the globe.

On the other hand, LG Corporation said that it will set emissions goals based on scientific evidence. The plan aligns its emissions goals with the Paris Agreement's aim to reduce global warming to 1.5°C.
