Test machine:
For this review we will be using a computer with the following configuration:
Hardware:
Motherboard: ABIT NF7 with Nvidia nForce2 nForce MCP chipset.
Processor: AMD Athlon XP 2100+ (TBRED-A) 266 MHz FSB.
RAM: 512 MB Samsung PC2700 DDR
GFX: ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
Sound: Nvidia nForce Audio
Hard disk: 2 Western Digital 80GB SE on a RAID 0 stripe.
System set-up:
The Optorite TED80Y1 is connected on the Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller and identifies itself as Optorite TED80Y1 DVD USB Device. Autorun was enabled for the device.
Software:
Windows XP Professional is installed on the computer along with Service Pack 1. We will be using the following software in this review:
Now it’s time to take a closer look at the writing technology used by the Optorite TED80Y1:
CD-Recordable:
The Optorite TED80Y1 uses CAV, (Constant Angular Velocity), to write at its maximum rated speed of 24x. This gives an average speed of 18.24x.
The following table sums it up:
CD-R | Supported | Write | Start | End | Average | Write |
Optorite | 24x | CAV | 10.67 | 24.09 | 18.24 | 5m:16s |
CD-Rewritable:
Unfortunately, our Ultra Speed Verbatim 32X CD-RW discs could only be written at 16X with the Optorite TED80Y1. The drive used P-CAV (Partial-Constant Angular Velocity) writing technology to write these Ultra Speed CD-RW discs at 16x**. The average speed is 16.03x.
**Maximum specification for this drive is actually 24x, however it could only burn our Verbatim 32x CD-RW at 16x.
The following table sums it up:
CD-RW | Supported | Write | Start | End | Average | Write |
Optorite | 24x | P-CAV | 10.73x | 16.03x | 15.28x | 6m:04s |
8X DVD+R / 4x DVD-R Writing Speed:
The Optorite TED80Y1 uses Z-CLV, (Zone-Constant Linear Velocity) to write DVD+R at 8x. The average speed is 5.12x and total writing time is 14 minutes and 06 seconds.
The Optorite TED80Y1 uses Z-CLV, (Zone-Constant Linear Velocity) to write DVD-R at 4x. The average speed is 3.77x and total writing time is 17 minutes and 15 seconds. Below are the results from some other drives for comparison:
The following table sums it up:
DVD±R | Supported | Write | Start | End | Average | Write |
Optorite | 8x +R | Z-CLV | 2.43x | 7.43x | 5.12x | 14m:06s |
Features and techniques:
Book type
(bitsetting):
The Optorite TED80Y1 does not support bitsetting.
Quality Scans:
The Optorite TED80Y1 drive does not support disc scanning.
Included software:
Now it’s time to look at the included software and to comment if needed. Note that we may not use the included software in our performance testing for this review.
Optorite has put together a good software bundle for the TED80Y1:
Nero OEM suite:
This is one of our preferred writing program suites, and Optorite gets a plus in our book for including it. Also include on this disc is PowerDVD 5.0, Adobe Acrobat and the User Manual.
Sonic MyDVD 5.3:
Sonic MyDVD is DVD Authoring software that can be used to create your own home DVD movies.
This rounds out a full featured suite of
programs for getting you started with your new drive.
Now that we have finished examining the drive and its writing strategies, it’s time to head on to next page, which is reading performance test…
