Windows 8 pirates beware: trojans disguised as keygens

While Windows 8 has received a lot of criticism on the web, it's still a hot subject with many users that want to try Microsoft's latest operating system. But as with all software, not everyone is willing to pay for it, so users are trying to find ways to obtain Windows 8 and more importantly, activate their installation. Downloads of Windows 8 can be found on all major torrent sites and is widely distributed. However making it usable by activating it is the real challenge.

Virus makers know this and TrendMicro reports that the first malware has appeared that targets users looking to activate their pirated Windows 8 installation. In order to active Windows 8, one needs a valid serial number and malware makers are distributing software that claims to generate those. When used users end up with installing a trojan. TrendMicro lists their threat level as low at the moment and the GUI of the fake key generators is in Russian. But there is no doubt that malware makers will continue to improve their software to trick even more users.
