Ted Sarandos, the Chief Content Officer at streaming giant Netflix, announced a new deal with Miramax which will add several films to the company's already impressive roster of online content come June.
The list of new movies encompasses everything from kid-friendly features to action-heavy flicks. Though Sarandos did not provide a full rundown, he rattled off several high-profile movies to be added soon, including "Clerks," "Cold Mountain," "From Dusk Till Dawn," "Good Will Hunting," "Kill Bill Volumes I and II," and "Pulp Fiction."
He also said entries from the "Halloween," "Scary Movie," "Scream" and "Spy Kids" series were part of the deal, though offered no specifics on whether or not that meant the entirety of each franchise or just random selections.
"We are delighted that U.S. Netflix members will be able to watch instantly all of these great movies and remain committed to constantly improving our already incredibly wide-ranging selection of films and TV shows," Sarandos said.
Miramax touted the multi-year agreement that encompasses "several hundred" films as a first for the company, and perhaps a sign of things to come.
"This agreement is an important first step in our digital strategy," said Mike Lang, Miramax CEO. "Netflix has always been a trailblazer, with a tremendous track record of innovation and quality customer service. We’re thrilled to now be in business with them as we build and revitalize the proud Miramax brand."
The deal comes nearly two months after Netflix faced forthcoming content pulls from both cable TV networks Starz and Showtime - the latter announcing its intention to move shows such as "Dexter" and "Californication" to its own streaming service, "Showtime Anytime."
Netflix is currently developing its own exclusive television show called "House of Cards," based on a British mini-series of the same name. Director David Fincher ("The Social Network," "Fight Club") is serving as Executive Producer with Kevin Spacey ("Superman Returns," "American Beauty") to star.
