Amazon is promising a much needed over the air update for the Kindle Fire will be coming in the next two weeks. The update will address performance issues and provide the ability to customize the carousel display.
When asked for comment about what would be in the update an Amazon spokesperson told Ars Technica, "We’re rolling out an over-the-air update to Kindle Fire that will improve performance, touch navigation, and give customers the option to choose what items display on the carousel."
The Kindle Fire has been selling tremendously well but has definitely been met with some criticism from reviewers about the overall user experience. My personal experience with the device left me a bit disappointed by the responsiveness of the touch screen as well as some lag in switching between applications and loading books.
The ability to prune the carousel is a nice improvement because it affords users the option to remove websites or books that they find embarrassing before handing the device to a friend to check out for a few minutes.
It's worth noting that this is not the first software update the Kindle Fire has received. Amazon stealthily updated the device to version 6.2 recently. The company never officially enumerated the changes that update was supposed to address but it seemed to make the interface a bit snappier. Version 6.2 also removed root user access from the device, but that was a quick thing to fix if rooting the device is important to you.
