Foxconn to manufacture PS3 Slim

Unconfirmed reports originating from Asia indicate a slim Sony PlayStation 3 finally has entered into production now that several companies are working with Sony to finalize manufacturing contracts.

Both Foxconn and Pegatron, <a href="http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/07/01/foxconn-declines- on whether or not it was chosen, but numerous Chinese sources indicate Sony and Foxconn are expected to work together.

It's unknown when or if Sony will confirm the news, but each day that passes provides further evidence of suspected PS3 Slim development.  If all goes according to plan, it's possible the PS3 Slim will launch this fall -- with a 120GB HDD -- helping prepare Sony for another important holiday shopping season.

Despite sporting a built-in Blu-ray player and superior hardware compared to the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox 360, the PS3 has continually lagged on sales charts.  In Japan, the Wii has dominated the PS3 and Xbox 360. Globally, Sony has had a hard time competing on the world market against Nintendo and Microsoft.

Microsoft is expected to cut Xbox 360 prices sometime this fall, and it's highly likely Sony will follow suit at some point.  The Wii, which has sold for $249 since release, also may have its first price cut, as the company has seen slowing demand for its popular game console.

Sony hopes lower-priced PS3s and a growing video game catalog will finally help the company begin to rack up solid sales numbers.

When Sony finally does release the 120GB PS3 Slim, is it something you'd be interested in?
