Hulu rolls out Linux Desktop version

Online video site Hulu recently launched a Linux version of its Desktop solution, opening up its content catalog to an even larger audience.

The Hulu Desktop for Linux version includes several new publisher tools for content makers so they have even more flexibility using Hulu.  Furthermore, webmasters, Web site designers, and bloggers will be able to use the Publisher Tools to help users find featured content highlights and other relevant content.

hulu-wall"Linux support has been the most requested addition to the original Hulu Desktop application since it launched," Hulu said in a public posting.

The Linux version has been built on Ubuntu 9.04 and Fedora 11, with any distribution using glib 2.16 supported.  Hulu developers hope to add Linux support for other distributions in the future, but it's unknown when that will happen.

Hulu Linux includes the expected keyboard and mouse controls, along with an upgraded interface so remote-control use also is available.

A Windows and Mac version of Hulu Desktop were released earlier in the year, with some users immediately requesting a Linux edition.

The Hulu Labs, which publicly launched last May, is designed to show off new technologies that could be introduced officially by the site.  I haven't seen many notable technologies as of yet, but I do recommend Hulu viewers occasionally visit the Hulu Labs to see what's being developed.
