Intel today released its 6th generation Core-i CPUs at Gamescom in Cologne. The first CPUs in Intel's new Core-i line-up are the Core i7-6700K and i5-6600K. The Skylake processors support both DDR3 and DDR4 RAM and the they will be accompanied by a chipset with PCI Express 3.0 support and more USB 3.0 ports.
It's only been two months since Intel revealed its 5th generation Core-i CPUs, the Broadwell family, and now the company already makes the 6th generation Core i7-6700K and Core i5-6600K CPUs available. The two quad-core CPUs are primarily aimed at PC gamers and enthusiasts who build their own PC and like to get some additional performance by overclocking.
Skylake processors for desktops and laptops are expected in the third quarter of this year. Intel promises that the Core i7-6700K, despite the same nominal clock speed, performs 10% better than its predecessor the Haswell Core i7-4790K. In addition, the chip maker has reworked the memory controller of 14 nm process manufactured Skylake processors, which now support DDR3L- and DDR4 RAM. In addition to a higher transfer rate is doubled when Skylake the maximum memory compared to DDR3 from 32 to 64 GB.
At Computex in June, severalSkylake boards were demonstrated using a LGA 1151 socket. Most of the boards had slots for DDR4 memory while cheaper boards were mostly fitted with DDR3L slots. Intel's Z170 chipset finally supports PCI Express 3.0 and DMI 3.0 as well as additional PCIe lanes and more USB 3.0 ports.
Further details on the architecture of Skylake processors will be revealed in mid-August at the Intel Developer Conference.
