Known critical vulnerability in Internet Explorer abused to install cryptominer

Antivirus company Trend Micro warns for a malvertising campaign where malicious advertisements are used to infect unpatched Internet Explorer users with a cryptominer. The attackers exploit a critical vulnerability in Internet Explorer that was patched by Microsoft last month.

Internet Explorer users who haven't installed the latest security updates and which view the malcious advertisement are infected with the crypto miner without any interaction. The infection goes unnoticeable, but afterwards users might find their computer feels sluggish. The crypto miner mines for the Monero cryptocurrency which can use a lot of resources.

Trend Micro reports it doesn't know on which websites the malicious advertisements were displayed. Users who haven't installed the latest security updates for Internet Explorer are advised to so as soon as possible.
