Samsung to invest in OLED again - in QLED variant

Samsung will produce OLED TVs the coming years, despite earlier reports. The first models with the new display type should become available in 2 to 5 year. Anonymous sources from the TV industry told Business Korea that next generation Samsung TVs will be using so-called QLED displays.

The Korean technology giant isn't new to OLED, it manufacturers smartphone displays using the technology. The new QLED technology is a new OLED variant that combined the properties of current Samsung quantum-dot TVs with those of OLED displays.

The advantage of OLED is that it's possible to disable pixels individually. This results in deeper black (black is actually black) and because pixels emit light themselves no backlight is needed anymore which means displays can be thinner. Another often mentioned advantage of OLED is that colors are more vivid and bright.

Quantum-dot technology adds a layer of nanocrystals that should result in even better colors and higher brightness.

OLED for TVs has been researched by Samsung for a long time but the company announced to stop development of the technology for TVs in 2015. According to Samsung because OLED TVs are hard to manufacturer which means production is expensive.

It seems the company now changed its mind, especially when it is able to combine OLED with QLED. So much that Samsung is no longer investing in further research in LCD, according to the Business Korea sources.
