Sony PlayStation 3 holiday sales reached near 4M sold

Sony recently said PlayStation 3 video game console sales from Nov. 24 to Dec. 28 reached 3.8 million units sold, which is the highest-selling period for the PS3 during any Christmas holiday shopping season.

Sony credits the 76% whopping year-over-year sales increase due to the slimmer PS3,  new Blu-ray and video game releases, price cuts, and a growing community using PlayStation Network.  The network now has more than 38 million global users.

The cost of the PS3 today, which received several prices cuts down to $300 over the past couple of years, may finally have reached a price point consumers are willing to pay.

free-playstation3In its fiscal year from April 2009 to March 2010, Sony hopes to sell 13 million PS3 units.  The previous fiscal year saw 10.1 million units sold, analysts note.

Sony is expecting to carry that momentum in 2010 with the anticipated launches of God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, Heavy Rani, MAG and ModNation Racers.  The company also is expected to receive another boost after the PS3 receives 3D game and Blu-ray support through a firmware upgrade.

The Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox 360 game consoles led the game industry while Sony struggled to fight back -- but Sony believes a lower priced PS3 paired with a developing game catalog and the PlayStation Network  should help the company in 2010.
