Transparent LCD monitors are in production by Samsung

Most tech begins basic.

As eager early adopters prove they will consistently shell out extra cash for fancy and novel products, consumer electronics manufacturers realize the power they wield - especially when it comes to computers, which have become an important if integral part of everyday life for millions of people.

Monitors - previously just an unexciting necessity of owning a computer - have become a commodity of their own. Though perhaps not entirely worthwhile (like buying a giant HDTV for a smallish bedroom) many people have grown to love a fancy new screen for both work and play.

Samsung announced that it's currently manufacturing a line of transparent LCD monitors. Will these whiz-bang see-through displays become the next big thing?

The source for all things lighting and insider news site OLED-display.net caught wind of the news that Samsung's next-gen computer monitor is now in mass production. The 22" display boasts a novel power-saving features thanks to its reliance on ambient light, reducing its electricity needs by up to 90% reports the site.

Samsung unsurprisingly expects big things of the technology it's spear-heading. In a press release, senior vice president of the company's Electronics LCD Business Younghwan Park said, "Transparent displays will have a wide range of use in all industry areas as an efficient tool for delivering information and communication. With the world's first mass production of the transparent LCD panel, Samsung Electronics plans to lead the global transparent LCD market by developing various applications."

While not the same model as the one currently tearing through the assembly line, Samsung showed off another transparent monitor at CES 2011. Engadget points out the previously seen AMOLED variety is "still on the drawing board."

A release date for the monitor has yet to be announced.
