VDIGI launches Wii HD upscaler

Nintendo has shied away from gracing the Wii with high-def capabilities, but VDIGI's VD-W3 claims to offer the next best thing.

The VD-W3 allows Wii owners to upscale their Wii's native 480p video output to 1080p high definition resolution. Powered by the Wii's USB port, the VD-W3 employs a 10-bit HD video scaler engine and offers 720p, 1080i or 1080p resolutions via an HDMI output. It also supports 1280x1024, 1440x900, and 1680x1050 for PC monitors. The VD-W3 also features an analogue stereo 3.5mm audio jack, handy if you're using an HDMI to DVI adaptor.

With Netflix preparing to offer Wii owners streaming movies and TV shows, VDIGI's VD-W3 is obviously an interesting proposition. Still, considering most HDTVs already apply upscaling to incoming standard-def signals, it remains to be seen if the VD-W3 is worth the $75 price tag.
