The International Data Corporation (IDC) predicts that the worldwide data can reach 175 zettabytes, with cloud dominating come 2025.
The forecast came from a collective data of the organization, with emphasis on the 61 projected data growth in six years. From this year’s worldwide data of 33 zettabytes, the increase indicates penetration on the cloud storage.
There are three datasphere locations that data comes from. First is the traditional cloud centers then the edge of the cell towers, until finally, the endpoints, which are smartphones and the Internet of Things (IoT).
IDC reports on world data usage, storage, and consumption. Last year, it has predicted the nine percent increase in data usage worldwide.
For IDC Senior Vice President David Reinsel, the massive increase of 175 zettabytes is ‘hard to imagine’ knowing that one zettabyte is equal to trillion gigabytes.
“If one were able to store 175ZB onto BluRay discs, then you’d have a stack of discs that can get you to the moon 23 times. Even if you could download 175ZB on today’s largest hard drive, it would take 12.5 billion drives. And as an industry, we ship a fraction of that today,” said Reinsel.
Other remarkable data was highlighted in the report, with the storage industry shipping 42ZB of capacity for storage devices and services. In addition, 49 percent of data is expected to be kept in public cloud environments.
Leverage Business Storage Capacity
According to IDC, more businesses will start to centralize their data for better management and control over user experience. This doesn’t come as a surprise because nowadays, more companies are integrating high-efficient data storage systems to secure confidential data.
The report indicates, “The responsibility to maintain and manage all this consumer and business data supports the growth in cloud provider data centers. As a result, the enterprise’s role as a data steward continues to grow, and consumers are not just allowing this, but expecting it.”
There will be a bold mix of technologies, traditional and modern, to store data. IDC said that the use of spinning hard-disk drives is still applicable because these are economical and has superb functions.
By 2025, an average person can have digital interactions of nearly 5,000 per day. This is a huge increase from today’s data consumption of only 700 to 800 digital interactions daily.
