Apple preparing 24 million next-gen iPhones

A report published on Digitimes indicates Apple is quietly preparing to ship 4.5 million new iPhone units at launch along with 20 million units before the end of the year.

The new iPhone reportedly uses an ARM Cortex A8 processor and 512MB onboard memory.  The device will support a 960x640 resolution and use a new wider viewing angle that offers a more visually appealing screen to look at.  The display is produced by LG Display and Prime View International, while the RAM is manufactured by Samsung Electronics.

Not surprisingly, Apple will again call on Foxconn for the bulk of manufacturing, and the company is frantically preparing for the phone's launch sometime later this year (probably in June).  Apple is expected toannounce the new device later next month during a conference in San Francisco.

Apple took current battery criticisms seriously, and plans to increase the new iPhone's battery life by using a thinner back panel on the phone.  Simplo Technology and Dynapack International Technology will be able to include larger batteries now that Apple shrunk the cover panel 33 percent for the new phone.

Since Apple is preparing 24 million units for sale in 2010, it appears that Apple is working to ensure that a shortage doesn't hit the market.   Analysts indicate the higher number could mean Apple wants to reduce the cost of the phone -- to undercut Research In Motion and other competitors -- while preparing for a larger sales rush.

Even though it appears Apple plans to sell upwards of 25 million new iPhones, the company has claimed a recent high-profile leak could negatively hurt sales.   I think it'd be wise for Apple to try and forget about the iPhone 4G inquiry altogether, but that seems unlikely.  Regardless of the leak, the next-generation iPhone is expected to sell extremely well.
