10 layer HD discs in the works

Following the article posted earlier about possible triple HD-DVD discs by Verbatim comes this news found over at DailyTech.

Behind closed doors at CES, Ritek were able to say that they have indeed developed triple and quad layer HD discs, with the possiblity of up to 10 layers being placed on a single side of either a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD disc in the future.

This is a significant improvement in the amount of data that could be placed on 1 disc. For HD-DVD this would be 150GB, and for Blu-Ray 250GB. Ritek confirmed however that problems lie with the lasers as there are unable to support so many layers.

This may never become a reality to consumers. And besides if holographic discs were to make an appearance soon, then these would be obsolete as capacities of 1TB have been announced for those.
