300 becomes fastest selling HD title

Warner's movie 300 has become the fastest selling high definition box office title and has already overtaken sales of the previous big HD hit, The Departed, according to TVPredictions.  So far, it has made over 250,000 sales between Blu-ray and HD DVD versions.  Warner, which is one of the few studios that backs both HD DVD and Blu-ray claims to have over 30% of the market share in high definition disc content.

Unlike most movie releases, Warner Bros decided to release this move to some cable TV High Definition on-Demand services on the same day it released the movie on Blu-ray and HD DVD.  Usually one needs to wait 30 days after a new movie release for it to hit Video on Demand services.  On the other hand, it does provide a drawback for movie rental stores, since consumers were able to watch it on demand the day it was released rather than having to rent it.

At this time of writing, the 300 Blu-ray version is in 3rd place in Amazon's top selling DVD list, just one rank behind the DVD version of 300.  However, unlike the popular Planet Earth series, where HD DVD was usually ahead of the Blu-ray edition of the series, the HD DVD version of 300 is well behind the Blu-ray version, ranking at the 11th position.
