AOpen 1640 Pro DVD drive review

Tweakers Asylum tested AOpen's 1640 Pro DVD drive. According to them the drive performes pretty well. If you ask me why... I'd have to say that it looks a damn lot like the Pioneer DVD 105s. I guess it to be the same...

Well this is what they say:

The playback quality if the AOpen 1640 Pro is awesome. No skipped frames and no hesitation, the drive had no problems keeping up with the movie. The Power DVD software is my personal favorite and was glad to see it come with this drive. The software makes taking screen shots of your favorite move very easy. You can setup the location of the screenshots and with a single mouse click or pressed "hot key" you have a screen shot.

Power DVD is easy to use and makes this a very nice package for the price. I will probably never be a big fan of watching movies on my desktop but I doubt I will be pulling the drive out of my box either.

The drive does have a couple weak points though. The AOpen 1640 Pro is excessively loud on spin-up almost annoying if the room is real quiet. When mounted the drive also has a gap at the top, this gap isn't enough to notice until you put the DVD in it by accident. I did this twice and was not amused by having to open the case to retrieve a movie.

Over all quality of the drive is great and for the money (about $125.00) it is worth the cost. If you are in the market for a DVD drive this is the one to get. Great quality and reasonable cost make this drive a winner. AOpen has done it again. A great product a great price.

So if you wanna make your own DiVX movies... there you go!

If the drive is the same like the Pioneer 105s (and I think it is) it's nice to know that you can "flash the regiocheck out of it" if you know what I mean

I'll wait for a Plextor DVD that's for sure
