Apple warns of overheating iPhones

Days after a growing number of Apple iPhone 3GS owners complained of overheating issues, Apple has posted a web page instructing iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS owners on how to keep their phones operating at safe temperatures.

The Apple support web site has several tips for iPhone owners looking to protect their phones from possibly overheating, including recommendations to operate the phone in temperatures between 32C and 95F -- and to store the phone in a location with temperatures ranging from -4F to 113F.

The iPhone 3GS CPU runs at 600MHz while the regular iPhone 3G has a 400MHz CPU, though the iPhone 3GS is supposed to consume less power.  Even so, there have been a number of reports from phone owners noting how their phone has gotten extremely hot while in use.

A temperature warning screen may pop up on the phone's home screen if it begins to run too hot, with Apple recommending the phone be turned off, moved to a cooler environment, and left alone until it cools down.

Apple essentially blamed phone owners, noting that leaving the phone in direct sunlight, in a hot car, or using certain iPhone applications on hot days may lead to overheating.

Apple didn't specify what is causing the problems, though several journalists and phone owners say it could range from using GPS to playing games on the phone.  It's also possible the phone's battery becomes extremely hot while it's being recharged, but we likely won't know for sure until Apple lists a public reason.
