Majapro used our newssubmit to tell us that some friend of his got an email from BUMA/STEMRA (Dutch copyrights association) about him using Napster and downloading MP3 files.
Since the mail is in Dutch, I'll be translating the most important parts:
Since some time BUMA STEMRA is trying to stop the illegal distribution of copyrighted music in the Netherlands. Napster's monitoring service found some illegal mp3's on your computer. Right now we ask you to delete all illegal mp3 files on your harddrive. With help of the ISP we got hold of your personal data. In a few days the police will "visit" lots of people to see wether they really deleted the illegal files. Charges can be up yo fl 10,- for an illegal song and fl 75,- for al illegal CD. |

Sinds kort is BUMA STEMRA, de Nederlandse auteursrechtorganisatie voor muziek, bezig met een grote actie om de illegale verspreiding van muziek onder de Nederlandse gebruikers met het uitwisselingsapplicatie Napster te stoppen. Zoals u misschien wel heeft vernomen is er onlangs in het Napster programma een filter opgenomen die het uitwisselen van muziek waar auteursrecht op berust moet voorkomen. Desalniettemin heeft ons Napster monitoring systeem een aantal auteursrechtelijk beschermde muziekstukken op uw PC aangetroffen. Daarom verzoeken wij u dringend de betreffende muziekbestanden in welk formaat dan ook onmiddellijk van uw systeem te verwijderen en te stoppen met het uitwisselen van illegale mp3 bestanden via welk uitwisseling programma dan ook. Wij hebben uw huis adres achterhaald met het sinds kort voor alle providers verplichte aftapsysteem, en komende week zullen wij in samenwerking met de politie een aantal invallen doen in diverse regio's om te controleren of de instructies uit de door ons verstuurde emails inderdaad zijn opgevolgd. Wordt er bij u dan nog illegale muziek aangetroffen, dan kunnen boetes oplopen tot fl. 10,= per muziekbestand en tot fl. 75,= per aangetroffen gekopieerde of illegale Compact Disc en zullen deze stukken worden overgedragen aan de Officier van Justitie als bewijs voor een eventuele gerechtelijke procedure. Not it's time for my personal opinion. I think this letter is fake. All Dutch people who read this will see that the style is like some 14-year old boy wrote this.
Also, I can hardly imagine that police officers are about to visit every Napster user to check his harddrive and cd collection (how can they ever prove that a compact disc is illegal... in Holland it's legal top copy a CD for personal use....).
Well there's a lot more to this letter that ain't right so I think this is a 1-4 joke... but hey, you never know! If anybody else received an email like this... please tell us!
