Sony, Philips and Compaq Microsoft have launched the Mount Rainier group. The goal of the companies is to create a CD-RW software standard. This standard should make the CD burner function as any other regular storage system. The group thinks that the current technologu (PacketCD) is to complicated. PacketCD software also requires extra software for other computers that not support the format yet.

Mount Rainier is using the UDF file system which comes with a few advantages, such as reducing defects, 2 kilobyte blocks and fast formatting using your hardware. The first 'edition' of Mount Rainier can be expected to be in Windows Whistler. The Mount Rainier group is also debating about making it available for non-Maint Rainer operating systems.

A large number of companies had positive reactions about it. These companies are NEC, Samsung, Lite-On, Acer, Ricoh, Pacific Digital, Ahead, Software Architects, Oak Technology, Phoenix Technologies and Adaptec.
