Camcorder pirate gets 7 years jail time

Johnny Ray Gasca, who was found guilty of copyright infringement in 2005 for using a camcorder in the cinema has been sentenced to seven years in jail and become the first person to be charged in the nationwide campaign against video piracy.  This person has also been convicted of using a social security number and escaping custody of his lawyer while awaiting his trial.

While Gasca mentioned he did not capture the screenings for profit, the prosecution pointed out diary entries which mention he earned $4,000 per week doing this.  His recordings were either sold in small shops or on the street.

If the copyright warnings were not enough to discourage this person from operating his activities, he was arrested three times for operating a camcorder in the cinema, the third time being caught by a camera designed to record the audience's reaction during the showing of the movie Anger Management.
