China to promote again the alternative to DVD format

After an apparent failure in the spreading of China's alternative to the DVD format, named EVD (Enhanced Versatile Disc), now there is another attempt to make EVD as the only standard in China.

According an article published at cbc.ca, Chinese electronics makers have revived the campaign on a massive scale, saying they plan to switch completely to EVD by 2008 and stop producing DVD players. Electronics makers, film studios and retailers are promising to sell EVD discs and players.

The EVD standard was developed originally because of cut into profits due to fees that must be paid to foreign owners of technology, but according to the article at cbc.ca EVD players will retail for about the same prices as a DVD player. Consequently, as usual, the new (imposed) standard will not bring any advantage to end-consumers.
