DVD-R 8x discs dominate DVD-R shipments

that the Taiwanese DVD recordable manufacturers such as CMC, Ritek, Optodisc and
Lead Data are currently mainly shipping 8x DVD recordables. The companies are
slowly shifting to the production of 16x DVD+R discs, full production of
these discs is expected in the next quarter.

First-tier Taiwan manufacturers of optical discs, CMC Magnetics, Ritek and Prodisc Technology, as well as second-tier makers GigaStorage, Lead Data and Optodisc Technology, are shipping 8x DVD-R discs as their mainstream DVD-R product.Currently, only CMC and Ritek produce 16x DVD-R discs.Optodisc plans to start shipping 16x DVD-R discs in September, the company indicated. Prodisc, GigaStorage and Lead Data will begin shipping 16x DVD-R discs by the end of this year, according to the companies.
