DVD+/-R pricing set to increase again

OEM pricing for DVD recordable media is set to increase yet again in the 4th quarter of this year, according to a new report at Digitimes. These latest price increase plans come hot on the heels of another price hike, which occurred in August of this year.

"As many small blank optical disc makers in China and several second-tier makers in Taiwan have withdrawn from the market, the global production capacity of blank optical discs has fallen short of global demand since the beginning of the third quarter 2008, CMC pointed out. In light of the favorable situation, CMC hiked its OEM prices by an average of 10% in August and Ritek followed suit soon after, industry sources pointed out."

With the demand out-pacing supply, CMC and Ritek will be hiking prices yet again, increasing OEM DVD+R and DVD-R costs by 10% and up. Gigastorage and Lead Data are also considering mark ups. These wholesale price adjustments will eventually trickle down to retail markets, causing most recordable DVD media to go up in price.

With continued increasing demand and less and less suppliers, it looks like recordable DVD media will continue to rise in price in the future. If you use a lot of DVDR's, now would be a great time to stock up or scout out some deals, before the additional pricing increases roll to the retail outlets.
