Disney suggestion for DVD releases irks theater owners

Ginsu Victim used our news submit to tell us "My opinion on the matter:The average movie fan understands the choice: Pay $20 to go alone, $30 to $50 with a group, and sit in dirty chairs with sticky floors and put up with babies and cellphones, or stay home and buy a DVD that has extra features and they can watch as much as they want with as many people as they want. With the exception of big movie releases, there"s not much incentive to go to the movies anymore. I say bring it on!"

Already faced with dwindling summer ticket sales, the nation's theater owners took a swipe at Walt Disney Co.'s incoming chief executive Thursday for suggesting that the health of the film industry may require the simultaneous release of movies in theaters and on DVDs. John Fithian, president of the National Assn. of Theatre Owners, said this scenario '” raised by new Disney Chief Executive Robert Iger during a call with analysts last week '” would only further damage theater owners, who have been confronting one of their toughest summers in years.
