FVD may benefit from EVD vendor's financial troubles

The
red laser HD alternative to blue laser, Taiwan's FVD and China's EVD, have
their own regional format war going on. However, according to this report
from DigiTimes,
it looks as though FVD (forward versatile disc), may soon
get an advantage on  EVD (enhanced versatile disc). It apppears
that EVD promoter, Beijing E-World Digital Technology, has defaulted on
some loan payments and now stands to lose some of its patents.

The China-based company used nine patents to secure a loan of
14 million yuan (about US$1.7 million) from two international financing
companies and it has now defaulted on repayment of this loan. As a result
of this, one of the financing companies is preparing to auction some of
the patents, said sources at China's State Intellectual Property Office
(SIPO).

The article goes on to say that the FVD standard may benefit from
this situation and could ship three million FVD discs this year. They also are
reporting that companies in Europe and the US have decided to launch PC-use
FVD discs in the second half of this year.
