Fujifilm introduces Blue Laser Professional Disc Media for XDCAM

Fujifilm has introduced its Professional Blue Laser Disc optical media, the Fujifilm PD711 for the XDCAM Professional Disc System.  The disc features a 23.3GB capacity with an advanced hard coating.  Unlike Blu-ray media, Professional Disc Media is targeted at broadcast and cinematography professionals for recording 1080i video with multiple sound tracks.

The discs are also rewritable and feature file-based random access read/write capabilities. The Fujifilm FD711 media can be written with one or two heads giving a transfer rate of 72MBps or a high speed 144Mbps respectively, allowing 60 minutes of 35Mbps HD video, 90 minutes of 25Mbps HD video or 120 minutes of HD video footage with an XDCAM HD device.

Other features include a hard coating resistant to dust and scratches, a dust resistant durable cartridge.  The discs are resistant to X-rays, humidity and heat and with proper use, the discs can handle over 1,000,000 read/write cycles with a potential archival life of 50 years.

The Fujifilm FD711 Professional Disc Media will be available in march 2007.
