Global DVD penetration to double by 2010

According to research firm Informa Media Group the amount of DVD products installed in homes will be doubled by 2010. In 2002 about 3% of world population was using DVD products, in 2004 it was about 23% and in 2010 it should be about 46%. The reason for the larger pentetration of DVD products is the relatively low price. Certainly (standalone) DVD recorders are expected to become much cheaper the coming years.

The report said about 70 million homes were expected to buy DVD players in 2004, taking the number of homes having DVD player to about 232 million by the year-end. Another 68 million homes were forecast to be added in 2005 alone, with the total reaching 493 million by 2010.

North America would supply 29 per cent of the total DVD sale in 2004, but the region's influence had waned from the 56 per cent share in 2000, Informa said in its 'Global DVD and Video Forecasts'. By 2010, North America would only account for 23 per cent of the world's total.

However, despite this, the US would remain the largest DVD nation, edging over 100 million homes.  Asia Pacific was expected to keep a 35-39 per cent share, thanks initially to fast take-up in Japan and helped in the longer term by rising penetration in China and, to a lesser extent, India.  Europe was expected to increase its installed base by 50 per cent in 2004 to 46.5 million.

This is all bad news for the VCR, the study predicts that by 2010 a slightly higher percentage of users will be using a DVD recorder or player and will outnumber the amount of people who are using a VCR. However it is expected that the VCR will still dominate the recording market for several years.
