HDTV adoption jumps during holiday season

During last year's holiday season and Super Bowl many Americans brought home a HDTV set. Currently 28 million of the American households have at least one HDTV set and 5.5 million of those got one during the holiday season and Super Bowl. "Consumers who become accustomed to the sleek and contemporary appearance of their first HD set are now looking to bring that benefit into other rooms in their home," says Maryann Baldwin, Vice President, Magid Media Futures. Now 10 million households have multiple HDTV sets and according to Baldwin this number will grow.

Especially younger adults have bought a new set to prepair for the upcoming digital transition. Falling prices have motivated this young group to buy a HDTV and 18% said they did to connect their TV to a next-gen console. "Now that the early majority has joined the ranks of the HD adopters, the demographic makeup of the HD population is looking more like the overall U.S. TV viewing universe," says Jill Rosengard Hill, Vice President and Managing Director. This would mean that HDTV sales will continue to develop now that high-definition television has reached a new, young group of people.

During the Super Bowl 25% of the Americans watched the Giants and the Patriots on a HDTV set.  We can't say yet when we will speak of higher percentages, but maybe this study gives you a better insight.
