Hackers succeed in ripping Blu-ray discs on a PS3

Not only have hackers found a way to install Fedora Linux on the PS3, including the ability to use its GUI, going by this story on gizmodo, they have succeeded in ripping a Blu-ray movie disc and PS3 game titles to the internal hard drive.  While the 60GB hard drive may seem large enough for a couple of movies, let's not forget that Blu-ray titles can be as large as 50GB in size, assuming a fully filled dual-layer Blu-ray disc.  The movie Talledega Night came to 20.9GB once copied across.  Hackers have also succeeded in copying the contents of PS3 discs across.

However, even though hackers may have succeeded in ripping the contents of a variety of PS3 game titles and Blu-ray disc movies, it will likely be some time before they figure a way of cracking the encryption.  In fact, part of the reason Blu-ray has been delayed so many times was due to trying to finalise its copy protection measures, so chances are that it could be a long way yet.  Even if they do succeed, new copy protection measures can be introduced on newly released Blu-ray titles that will prevent the hack from working on new titles, unlike CSS where once the system is cracked, it is broken for good.  Finally, as Sony released firmware updates for its PSP to block the use of homebrew software, chances are that they will do the same for the PS3.  On the other hand, even if they do, this does not mean every one out there is going to update their console.

Thanks to 4633 for letting us know about this news.  This user added:  Here's something that will help drive up the ps3 on your list of Must-Buy once blu-ray become the norm. Apparently, you can use the ps3 to dump blu-ray movies and game into ISO format.
