Intel Into Encrypting

At the Intel Developer Forum, Intel got into the encryption game this week. Intel wants to put encryption between your system and a digital display to prevent pirates from bootlegging movies.

Intel demonstrated a copy protection scheme known as High-bandwidth Digital Copy Protection which encrypts every pixel as it is transferred to a digital display. HDCP is developed entirely by Intel to complement the work by the Digital Display Working Group. HDCP uses a 56-bit encryption key with different keys distributed to vendors. A key violation could be tracked down and revoked over a satellite broadcast network, for example. A copy of the specification is on the Digital Content Protection web site.
