LG to roll out phone app store

LG Electronics is the latest company to introduce an app store, looking to offer software, games and other apps LG phone owners may look forward to using... for a price.

LG, currently the No. 3 phone maker in the world, plans to offer at least 1,400 applications, and will also feature a small handful of free apps.  LG plans to market the store towards phone owners in Asia, then will eventually roll out the service to South America, Europe and Australia.

The South Korean phone manufacturer hasn't admitted plans to introduce the service in the U.S., which is controlled by Apple ad RIM at the moment.  I would be extremely surprised if the app store wasn't made available in North America at some point, but LG may just want to focus on markets it thinks it can control.

If a company manufacturers mobile phones, it just seems like launching an app store is the "in" thing to do at the moment.  Led by the ever popular Apple App Store designed for the iPhone, RIM, Google Android, Palm, and other phone makers have slowly rolled out app stores.

An app store is especially important for phone manufacturers have had success selling regular phones, but have struggled attempting to sell smartphones to consumers.  The global mobile phone market is struggling as consumers elect to keep their current phones, except for the smartphone market, which continues to grow.

If you're a phone owner with access to an app store, are you using the service?
