The world's leading storage manufacturer LG has unveiled its latest Super Multi Blue Dual-Format drive at this year's International CES going by a press release at Thomasnet. This drive offers the feature of the LG GBW-H10N Blu-ray writer recently reviewed on CDFreaks along with HD DVD-ROM read-back support and SecurDisc technology, which LG co-developed with Nero. The optical pickup LG developed for this drive is the world's first device capable of supporting Blu-ray read & write support as well as HD DVD read-back, thus allowing consumers to playback pre-rerecorded content on HD DVD without needing a separate drive for HD DVD media.
Unlike the basic password encryption technology support included with writers by some manufacturers, LG's SecurDisc technology also includes Disc Creator Authentication to allow recipients to verity the disc's contents is authentic, Integrity checking and Data Insurance using radiantly stored data to help recover from damaged or unreadable data.
The product will be released during this first quarter, priced under $1,200. LG has also announced that its Super Multi Blue, BH-100 dual-format high definition disc player will be available early this year. Unlike the HD DVD and Blu-ray players currently available, the BH-100 can play both formats, although going by this earlier report it looks it lacks some of HD DVD's main features, such as iHD, PIP, user bookmarks and so on.
