MPAA president Jack Valenti declares war on film pirates

During an unscheduled appearance Monday at ShoWest, the annual motion picture convention, MPAA president and CEO Jack Valenti declared war on film pirates. During the appearance Valenti revealed plans for an international trailer that is being developed to discourage piracy:

Valenti disclosed plans for the antipiracy trailer, saying that MPAA companies have formed a working group with key international cinema companies to develop it. He said the trailer can be adapted to local countries and customs.

"We're doing some research now -- we've finished in two countries and have six or seven more to go -- just to see how each culture, each country, responds to this," he said. "We don't want just English-speaking characters doing this (in the trailer); we want individuals from each country to be part of this trailer.

"If it works, we hope it can make a modest impress on the consciousness of people who don't want to steal," he said. "Even though in the digital world, it is so easy to do so. We have a massive task ahead of us."

In the article we can read that although, according to Valenti, the movie industry loses $3.5 billion a year due to piracy, TriStar Film Distributors International praised the $17 billion that movies grossed worldwide last year.
