Massive Blu-ray changers coming soon

Staggering monuments to physical media, Sony's two latest Blu-ray Mega Changers hold 200 and 400 discs at a time.

The exact release dates aren't known, but Sony Insider reports that these changers are coming soon. The larger of the two models, the BDP-CX7000ES, was spotted on a Swiss product page for 2509.45 CHF, or roughly $2,250. There's no word yet on pricing for the smaller-capacity BDP-CX960.

Of course, most people don't have a collection of 200 Blu-ray discs, let alone 400, but backwards compatibility with DVD means an entire movie library could be stuffed into these monstrosities.

Given that Sony's existing 200-disc Blu-ray changer, the HES-V1000, packed a 500 GB hard disc drive and DLNA via Ethernet, it's safe to say the new players will have some extra perks beyond a simple changer. Plus, it'll likely run on Blu-ray's 2.0 profile. As Sony Insider notes, the company hasn't issued a firmware upgrade for the HES-V1000, so you'll have to splurge again if you want the new profile's faster load times.

Blu-ray may have won the format wars against HD-DVD, but there's still downloadable media and the threat of SD cards to deal with. If you're still wagering on Blu-ray, this is the equivalent of going all in.
