MediaMarkt removes Macrovision circumvention devices from the shelves

Webitpr used our news submit to tell us that
the recently introduced German copyright law has struck once again. The law that is based
on the European Copyright Directive (EUCD), the European equivalent of the US'
DCMA (Digital Copyright Millenium Act) is one of the most strict laws in
Europe and is feared by all companies that are into backup software and
hardware. Recently Elby (developers of CloneCD and CloneDVD) have moved CloneCD
to Slysoft a company based on Antiqua a Carribean Island with not much
legislation regarding copyright laws. Also development of DVD backup software
DVDFab has been stopped due the copyright and the future of other software products is unsure.

MediaMarket which is a big electronics chain in Germany has now decided to not challenge this law and has removed a device called: "Macro 2000 copy protection circumvention device " from its shelves. MediaMarket is also active in other European countries and has announced that it  has adjusted itself to the new copyright law situation and will in future comply with the law. This will probably mean that the company will not challenge the law, but will remove any reasonable device that circumvents copy protections and also software could be a target.

The holding company (Media Saturn Systemzentrale GmbH) additionally declared that 'Media Markt has adjusted itself to the new copyright law situation and will in future comply with the law." As a consequence, Media Markt will remove all units of the Macro 2000 copy protection circumvention device from its outlets in Germany. The new Copyright Act prohibits the sale of copy protection circumvention devices in Germany. The injunction is one of the first legal actions enforced following the Copyright Act's enactment one month ago.

"We are pleased with Media Markt's prompt acceptance of the interim injunction as a final decision in the action and their compliance with the broad scope of the new IP legislation," stated Martin Brooker, European Director of Sales for Macrovision. Brooker further indicated that 'Macrovision is determined to act decisively to combat the threat of illegal copying throughout Western Europe."

Macrovision has a wide array of copy protections, used on VHS tapes, DVD movies games and audio CDs. The companies best known product is SafeDisc. For more information please read this article.
