MediaTek still on top of optical storage IC sales

Digitimes reports that MediaTek remains a leader and committed competitor in the optical storage IC arena, according to a company executive of MediaTek. MediaTek, on our site widely known for their chips in Lite-On drives is one of the worlds largest optical storage chips manufacturers.

The article also names some of the new products MediaTek will be shipping, that will most likely be used in new Lite-On models:

Mingto Yu, Mediatek's director of finance and spokesperson, made the remarks in response to reports that rival ALi Corporation (formerly Acer Laboratories) is making headway in China's southern provinces while cutting into Mediatek's strongest sales base in eastern China. That, combined with earlier reports that showed a 23.1% revenue decline in May from April, has heavily damaged the company's share price on concern about its prospects.

Yu said the revenue slippage was due to the seasonal pattern. Sales in the third quarter will likely remain flat from the second quarter, Yu predicted, citing continued weakness in PC demand.

Despite the slowing market climate, Mediatek is committed to pushing new chips into volume production, Yu added, naming DVD-player single chips that started production in March, 48x CD-RW chipsets and 'combo" chipsets integrating 24x CD-RW drives and 16x DVD-ROMs in May and DVD-ROM single chips are scheduled for June.
