Mt Rainier project

Sony, Philips, Compaq and Microsoft are developing some software that should create the possibilty to use a cdwriter like a floppy. Just drag and drop all you want is their idea.

Well this sounds nice, but there's more to it. Because Mt Rainier is meant to be a new standard, only new drives will support it. Those drives are planned for around Q2-2001.

Now the software part... it will be implemented in the second version of Windows XP. Also Linux will be supported and Macintosh has shown intrest as well.

A lot of other companies have shown intrest as well and over 40 are willing to help developing. Think about Acer, Dell, Plextor etc.

Hmmm it sounds nice, but don't we know this system yet as PacketCD or DirectCD? I know this is just (crappy) software but the idea is the same... so why change hardware when they implement the standard into the OS?

Last but not least: I hope Nero cooperates (because DirectCD and Nero....it's like fire and ice!)
