NEC is the latest company to develop a new display that offers a 3D view of images on the screen without the need to wear specialized glasses.
The new 12.1-inch display should become available in Japan next spring, with screen thickness reportedly beginning at 3-inches, Japanese news reports indicate. The resolution on all NEC 3D screens will be similar to normal LCD displays used as computer screens today.
NEC hasn't released pictures or specific details regarding its new line of 3D displays, but promises consumers will be impressed.
3D TVs and screens have developed quite a bit over the past 12 months, as manufacturers see a continued demand for such devices. Aside from gaming and in the living room, 3D screens can be used in the medical and automotive industries, where having a 3D view of the human body and structural designs is extremely helpful.
Even though 3DTVs aren't necessarily new to the market, the quality of the screens -- plus the added bonus that 3D glasses aren't needed -- have helped convince movie studios and more consumers to show interest in the products.
Several movie studios are already working on Blu-ray and DVD movies aimed at the home 3D market. In addition, there are a growing number of 3D movies being played in theaters, where specialized glasses are necessary. Ticket sales have been impressive, Hollywood analysts have previously stated.
